The paper focuses on topical issues in professionally oriented foreign language educationwhich contributes to training competent medical specialists able to work efficiently in the context of sustainable innovative development of society. The main priorities in improving the quality of foreign language teaching and learning at nonlinguistic higher schools are connected with enhancing students’ motivation, making the lessons more interesting, informative and effective, encouraging autonomous learning, incorporating information and communication technologies and electronic content into the educational process, which enables learners to develop their professional foreign language communicative competence in shorter periods of time and promotes a higher level of specialist training.
