In this article, we study the relationship between dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and the occurrence of cardiotropic viruses, such as enteroviruses, Epstein—Barr virus, varicella-zoster virus, parvovirus B19, adenoviruses, herpes simplex virus, human herpesvirus 6, cytomegalovirus. According to our data markers of detected viral agents were identified in 31.0% of patients. Nucleic acids of these pathogens were detected in 72.7% of heart tissue samples from patients with DCM. Active viral infection was reported in 11.0% of patients. Among the pathogens associated with DCM, the most frequently detected were enteroviruses, human herpesvirus 6, and parvovirus B19. These data justify the need for identification of DCM-associated patient-specific viruses in order to adjust the treatment strategy accordingly.
