Formal thought disorder in individuals with the risk syndrome for first psychosisThe risk syndrome for first psychosis is a new concept in contemporary psychiatry and is a reflection of the “prodrome” schizophrenia. Formal Thought Disorder (FTD) has been considered as a central characteristic of schizophrenia for many years. FTD in combination with other high-risk criteria may be a valuable predictor of subsequent development of psychosis. The presence of FTD in clinical high risk individuals was assessed with methods of experimental pathopsychology. We assessed FTD in putatively prodromal individuals (n=244). FTD was revealed in 88.5% of clinical high risk individuals. FTD which can be detected by techniques of experimental pathopsychology are closely associated with clinical high risk for psychosis.
