Studies of families, twins and adopteens have helped to quantify the genetics contributions to schizophrenia and other disorders of schizophrenia spectrum. Analyses of in twin data have confirmed genetic susceptibility and recent life stresses as the major determinants of schizophrenia. Modern approach in research is testing of hypothesis of measured gene-environment interaction (GxE). AGxE occurs when the effect of exposure to an environmental pathogen on health is conditional on a person’s genotype (or conversely, when environmental experience moderates genes’ effects on health condition. This article describes the contemporary state of art in regard to genetics of schizophrenia and hypotheses of measured gene-environment interaction.
